For their Summer 2017 issue, Medicine at Michigan highlighted a Medical School program that inspires high school students from underrepresented communities to pursue careers in health care.

We decided to take a very visual approach to this particular feature by showcasing a variety of school instruments and items familiar to students (scissors, a composition book, ruler, etc). We illustrated a black and white composition book with medical illustrations formed out of the negative spaces of the texture.

For the cover of this issue, we illustrated the silhouette of a doctor/physician within the black and white pattern of a composition book. In doing so, we are illustrating that through the Doctors of Tomorrow program, high school students of different backgrounds all have one significant thing in common—they have been gifted an opportunity to see the reflection of who they are yet to become—and are thus, inspired to pursue medical professions.

We were approached in 2017 to design the 2018 Holiday Card for Johns Hopkins Museums. The challenge this year was to incorporate holiday messaging around one of Evergreen’s prized collections, The Baltimore Bird — while also encouraging the card’s recipients to purchase the museum’s new book, Evergreen The Garrett Family, Collectors and Connoisseurs — in which the artwork is featured.

In the end, we decided upon a trifold card with an elaborate die-cut so that as the user interacts with the card, the messaging emerges from the foliage.

Increasingly, women are speaking out about the need for more awareness of pelvic floor disorders. Many people don’t realize, for example, that risk factors include gender (men do experience pelvic floor disorders, but at much lower rates), age, obesity and having given birth — particularly via vaginal delivery. It’s time to start talking about it.

For this story, we took a bold, illustrative approach to such a sensitive subject matter, focusing on the "Let's Talk" aspect of the story. The opener consists of a woman's torso/pelvic region made up of a series of graphic speech bubbles that overlay one another — suggesting a discussion. The overall affect of this conveys pelvic floor disorders as an on-going conversation among doctors and patients alike, and that increased awareness from both healthcare professionals and patients will breed a better understanding and more successful treatment options.

Johns Hopkins approached us in the spring of 2018 to help develop an identity/invitation set for an upcoming night of jazz glamour inspired by Ambassador John Work Garrett — A Diplomatic Affair.

The piece brought it’s own challenges — to remain historically accurate, drawing aesthetic inspiration from ambassadorial glamor, Internationalism, and the early 1920s. We ended up featuring The Parisienne, March 1916 on the cover — and splicing elements from the illustration on the interior of the card to recreate a nightfall scene. The accompanying stock was specifically chosen to compliment the beautiful strokes used in the original artwork.

Dr. Leonard McCoy had it easy. To diagnose maladies aboard the fictional Star Ship Enterprise, he whipped out a tricorder: a hand-held gizmo that scanned and diagnosed the patient instantly. Now Aezon Health, a team of 15 Hopkins undergraduates, is trying to make that fiction a reality as one of 30 teams around the world—and the only team made up of undergraduates—competing in the qualifying round for the $10 million Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE.

For their Summer 2014 issue, Johns Hopkins tasked us with illustrating this incredible story. We decided to play off of the Star Trek title by illustrating the iconic Spock with his own, homemade Tricorder. On his back, as if he were wearing a campus, athletic jacket, are the letters “JHU” to help ground the piece locally.

The SECU MD foundation switched up its annual fundraiser to comply with COVID-19 restrictions and to bring positivity through their Kindness U campaign. This month-long campaign raised over $50,000 and distributed more than 1,200 kindness kits to Marylanders, everywhere.

These kindness kits included various items meant to inspire “acts of kindness,” such as postcards, flower seeds, sidewalk chalk and positivity rocks and were free for anyone who requested them between October 12 and 16.

We were challenged to create an “About the Team” page that broke all stereotypes. The client did not want the typical “smiling headshots in bubbles” look that has become a trend and staple. Instead, we decided to approach the team page from an interactive perspective — all whilst highlighting Seagall Group’s beautiful Fells Point office space.

The finished piece takes the viewer into the space — letting them get to know all of Segall’s team on a more personal level — almost like a “day in the life.” All photos were shot on site while engaging with the team to create a natural, candid look and feel.

Goodwill, a leader in salon hair care and styling products, challenged us to create packaging for one of their color lines, Colorance for a special themed promotion coming up in Cosmoprof stores. The challenge was to utilize existing model imagery that has been seen by stylists on countless occasions, but to make them feel fresh, intriguing, and new.

We ended up overlaying two model images, editing them to give off a “3-D” effect that plays off of geometric shapes within the model’s clothing as well as the overall idea of “POP!”

The agency that protects the president and other national leaders— is closing in on one of the toughest challenges in forensic science: identifying suspects by their voices alone, with enough certainty to sway a jury.

For their Summer 2015 issue, Johns Hopkins tasked us with illustrating this story. We took a more fun, whimsical approach to the subject by illustrating a familiar, stereotypical crime suspect placing a call to the White House (alluded to in the background).

StoryKit is a subscription based activity kit revolving around classic children’s literature for children preschool aged children up to the fifth grade. StoryKit recognizes that each child is an individual, that all children are creative, and that literacy is a key to a healthy, developing young mind. Our goal with StoryKit is to expose children to literature in a manner that is as engaging as play. By extending the story lines through play, children are enhancing reading comprehension skills, creative thinking, and building their imagination.

Each activity kit is based off classic children’s literature titles. Parents are able to browse the homepage to find a title that would speak to their child’s interests or age level. Inside each kit are two activities that relate back to key plot points, characters or scenarios from the story.

StoryKit, while child based, actually speaks to two distinct audiences: parent and child. StoryKit aims to engage children with the classic literature that surrounds them – however, it also aims to provide parents with appropriate outlets, suggestions, and opportunities to continue to enrich their children’s lives through play and words.

Rachel Sangree is an expert in the history and construction of covered wooden truss bridges, which began to spring up in New England in the early 1800s and reached their height of popularity by the end of the Civil War. By looking back in time to study the evolution of covered bridges, Rachel Sangreeequips students with wisdom they need to design structures of tomorrow.

For this story, we decided to draw inspiration from the beautiful shapes created in the bridges photographed as well as focus on the juxtaposition of scale by combining a wide-angle shot of Rachel at the bridge and a close-up detailing image of the same bridge to create an elegant opening spread. An engaging typographic overlay on the close-up shot helps emphasize the activity of observing the detail and mechanics of these historical structures.

As an engineer and an environmentalist, Erica Schoenberger is committed to finding ways to improve our unhealthy relationship with Mother Earth. Her new book lays out causes of our troubles and offers some fairly radical fixes.

This direction took Erica out of the lab setting and placed her into an environment that speaks to her incredible passion. We worked with Johns Hopkins to shoot at the Cylburn Arboretum in Baltimore, where there is a beautiful wooded landscape with seemingly "electrifying" trees. These trees, while beautiful, appear to be chaotic. We feel the chaotic nature serves as a visual tool for some of Erica's feeling of man/capitalism causing "distress" on the environment. The headline being woven and intertwined amongst the branches, creates depth and compliments the location's complexity.

“Our face is integral to how other people see us and how we see ourselves. If it is disfigured by a genetic disorder, ravaged by cancer, or shattered in a car accident, the trauma goes much further than skin deep.”

For this particular feature, we decided to explore a more abstract representation of Grayson’s work in bone grafting for facial reconstruction. Using a portrait of Grayson shot specifically for this story, we introduced a vectorized version of part of his face, symbolizing the work being done in 3-D bio printing — creating an overall futuristic and cutting-edge look and feel.
